NHS.net update: Account Secret

The user Account Secret will be used by NHS.net Connect and local IT helpdesk agents to verify a user’s identity in certain scenarios, for example, when a user contacts the helpdesk to unlock their account or when the desk needs to reset a user’s password.

The campaign will consist of the following three stages:

Stage 1: Self-Setup

  • Users will be contacted centrally by fortnightly communication to upgrade their accounts and set their Account Secret via the Self-Service section of the portal.

Stage 2: Soft Enforcement

  • Users who have not set up their Account Secret by 3rd February 2025 will be asked to do so the next time they log in into the NHS.net Connect Portal; they will not be able to access portal services until they set up the Account Secret.
  • Weekly communications will be sent to end users requesting self-setup and detailing a hard enforcement in the future.

Stage 3: Hard Enforcement

  • Access to Office 365 services will be blocked to users who have not set up their Account Secret.
  • Users will be asked to access the NHS.net Connect Portal to set up their Account Secret to restore access.

The aim of the process is to make password resets for users easier, remembering one thing rather than the answers to three questions!

Account Secret Migration

Boost your security and safety by upgrading your account today.

Upgrade your NHS.net Connect account by setting up your Account Secret via the Self-Service section in the NHS.net Connect Portal. This feature replaces the previous security questions and answers functionality.

The user Account Secret will be used by NHS.net Connect and Local IT helpdesk agents to verify your identity in certain scenarios. For example, if you need to contact your Local Administrator (LA) to unlock your account or to reset your password on your behalf.

Upgrading to Account Secret safeguards your personal data and strengthens security across the NHS.

Benefits of setting up an Account Secret

  • Protects user account with a stronger security measure than previous security questions.
  • Simplifies the login process if you are locked out of your account.
  • Reduces the risk of your account being hacked.
  • User friendly compared to previous security questions.
  • Secures data to latest data security standards.

How to set it up

You can easily set up your Account Secret through the NHS.net Connect Portal Self-Service option. Please visit the NHS.net Connect Support site which provides a step-by-step guide on how to set up a User Account Secret.
